Producer responsibility in brief
Producer responsibility means the obligation for producers and importers to organise and finance waste management operations for their products. Producer responsibility is provided for in the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the Finnish Waste Act.
The aim of the legislation is to increase the reuse of packaging as recycled material and to prevent environmental damage.
Who does the producer responsibility apply to?
- Companies that either package products in metal packaging in Finland or import metal packaging for the Finnish market
- and have a turnover of at least one million euros.
Mepak organises the recycling of metal packaging waste for companies with producer responsibility in Finland, the implementation of which is monitored by the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre. Companies with producer responsibility must join a producer organisation or submit an application to the producer register at the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre.
Producer organizations operating in Finland have established the Delegation of Producer Organizations to enhance cooperation and communications.
